Could Larger Brains Lower Dementia Risk?
As individuals age, there is typically a slight decrease in brain size. Yet, in cases of dementia, this process accelerates due to nerve cell damage and death. Now, a recent study from UC Davis Health suggests there may be positive news for dementia. Since brain sizes have been growing over the past century, we may be looking at a decrease in age-related dementia.
For a study published in JAMA Neurology, researchers examined data from participants in the Framingham Heart Study (FHS), a long-term study spanning over 75 years and involving 15,000 individuals. They focused on 3,226 FHS participants born between 1930 and 1970 who had undergone two MRI scans measuring various brain structures, such as the intracranial volume (ICV), cortical gray matter, and more.
The study revealed that those born in the 1970s exhibited larger brain volumes compared to those born in the 1930s. Specifically, they had a 6.6% greater ICV, 7.7% more white matter, 2.2% more cortical gray matter, 5.7% greater hippocampal volume, and 14.9% larger cortical surface area.
This study builds on previous research that links a larger brain volume with a lower risk of dementia, yet it may have limitations. The study participants were primarily non-Hispanic, white, and healthy. Therefore, these findings may not accurately represent the greater U.S. population.
Intermittent Fasting May Boost Gut Health
Intermittent fasting, where you alternate periods of eating with fasting, may help with everything from cardiovascular disease to cancer and type 2 diabetes. Now, a new study has found that intermittent fasting may also help to protect the GI tract as we age—including our small intestines.
For a study, researchers from the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University studied mice they genetically modified to increase the pace of aging. One group of mice had access to food around the clock, while the other mice were fed during alternating 24-hour periods.
At the end of eight months, researchers observed notable improvements in mice subjected to fasting. They exhibited elevated levels of beneficial gut bacteria, a reduced weight, and alterations in intestinal structure indicative of improved blood glucose regulation and reduced inflammation.
While this research suggests that intermittent fasting may offer benefits for gut health as individuals age, more studies are needed to confirm these findings and understand the potential mechanisms involved. Nonetheless, adopting a balanced and varied diet alongside intermittent fasting, under the guidance of healthcare professionals, may contribute to overall gut health and well-being as people grow older.

Your Skincare Routine May Be Making You Look Older
Retinol is a lab-made chemical derivative of vitamin A, and it’s one of the hottest ingredients in skincare right now.
But this trendy new chemical also has serious drawbacks that may actually CAUSE premature signs of aging.
